Rae Sremmurd "SremmLife" Album Review

Well, this is one I’ve been intending for some time now: here’s my review of Rae Sremmurd’s 2015 debut album “SremmLife.” Though some people may not be crazy about them, I actually enjoy a few of Rae Sremmurd’s songs. However, I’ve never heard any of their albums in full, so in preparation for “SremmLife 3,” which is expected to release at some point this year, what better time than the present to go back and listen to the first two albums? So, let’s jump in and discuss each individual song:

Lit Like Bic: While this one is interesting instrumentally, Swae Lee’s verse goes on a bit too long, feels a bit repetitive after a while, and it feels like this one doesn’t have much of a hook. Slim Jxmmi’s verse is a lot better, but it, unfortunately, isn’t enough to save this song.

Unlock the Swag (ft. Jace): Sorry Jxmmi, leave the hooks to Swae. This one goes on too long and it’s too repetitive. I like some of what’s going on instrumentally here, and Jace’s verse is pretty strong, but Jxmmi’s verse is not great, and Swae’s verse is short and pretty boring. Could be decent at a party, but it’s still overly long and pretty boring.

No Flex Zone: While Swae’s voice can be a bit annoying, this one has an admittedly decent hook, a solid verse from Swae, and a really strong verse from Jxmmi (I’ll be completely honest, his line where he says “talking money when I’m with Italians” was just absolutely hilarious in the best way). Now that I’m finally hearing the song, I can see why this got some hype, it’s a pretty solid song.

My X: Though slightly repetitive and a bit too long, the hook is not terrible overall. Jxmmi has a decent verse, but Swae’s verse is where the song really shines. It’s not the strongest song on this album, but it’s not too bad. I actually like it a bit.

This Could Be Us: I really like the instrumental on this one, and while Swae and Jxmmi’s verses were nothing special, they weren’t too bad, and the hook was admittedly pretty catchy. I can’t really say this track is one of the album’s best, but it’s not too bad overall, and I have a good feeling it’ll grow on me in time.

Come Get Her: Has an admittedly catchy hook that thankfully doesn’t go on too long or feel too repetitive, and both Swae and Jxmmi do a pretty good job on their verses. Instrumentally, it’s pretty solid as well. This was the first song I'd ever heard from Rae Sremmurd, and I think it still holds up pretty well.

Up Like Trump: While Swae’s different sound in his vocals really fascinated me, and the hook might grow on me a bit, I don’t think his verse was very strong. Jxmmi’s verse is pretty solid, though. Not a bad song, just not one of the album’s strongest. Might grow on me in the future, though.

Throw Sum Mo (ft. Nicki Minaj and Young Thug): Nicki sticks firmly in her comfort zone with the hook on this one, but it’s admittedly pretty catchy. Both Swae and Jxmmi sound pretty good on this one, and their verses are pretty memorable. While Young Thug’s verse is nothing special, it doesn’t detract from what is a really enjoyable track overall.

YNO (ft. Big Sean): I actually really like the hook, and both Swae and Jxmmi have some pretty strong verses on this one, and even Big Sean’s guest appearance is pretty great (I particularly love the line where he says “I stuck to the plot, stuck to the script, and I don’t even screenwrite”). Definitely one of the best songs on this album, I really enjoyed it a lot.

No Type: “I don’t got no type, bad bitches is the only thing that I like.” SO THEN YOU HAVE A TYPE!!!!! I’m sorry, I always have to emphasize that. Outside of that stupid line (which one person I saw tried to claim is a double negative way because “I don’t got no type” actually means he HAS a type) the hook is actually kinda catchy, and Swae has a solid verse, even if Jxmmi’s is kind of underwhelming. Not one of the album’s best, that’s for sure, but it’s not bad overall.

Safe Sex Pay Checks: I like the hook on this one (the fact that they are promoting safe sex might have something to do with that), and the instrumental is pretty sweet. While neither Swae nor Jxmmi’s verses are at their best with their verses, they still did a solid job overall, and I feel like this was a good song to end off the album with. Even if it’s not my #1 favorite song on the album, it just feels like the right song to finish up with, and overall, I did really enjoy it.

Overall, I actually had a pretty good time with this album. It started off kind of slow, and I feared for the worse after “Lit Like Bic” and “Unlock the Swag,” but after that, the album got better. The album itself just feels like an endless turn-up, and I feel like both Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi really do show some solid potential on quite a few tracks. I think they could do a bit better with a lot of their hooks (quite a few go on a bit too long and get a bit repetitive), but all in all, after powering through a slow start, I walked away having enjoyed myself with this one. It kept me interested, it kept my head-nodding, and to that, I’d say that Swae and Jxmmi (and Mike WILL Made-It, for that matter) did a fine job. Is it the best thing I’ve ever heard? No, but for all that it does right, I’d say it was a success.

Rockstar shit, skrt skrt.
