Now that my long series of Weeknd reviews is over, it’s time to review the latest Bruno Mars album, 2016's “24K Magic.” Outside of the title song (which I’m still largely unfamiliar with) and That’s What I Like (great song, I’ll get into it more during the review), I actually missed out on this album when it came out, but I heard some very positive things about it, so I’m very excited to dig into this album and give my thoughts, so let’s look at each song:
24K Magic: Immediately, this has a very different sound from a lot of the Bruno Mars songs I know, and while I wasn’t crazy about it at first, it’s just too funky and catchy to resist, and the hook is really strong. I initially wasn’t crazy about this one, but now that I’ve actually sat down and listened to it properly, I gotta admit it’s really good!
Chunky: Another song that I can only describe as “irresistible.” It’s slower than 24K Magic, but still grooving, catchy stuff with some very strong vocals from Bruno and a very strong hook. It's a very sexy song that I’ve gotta say is one of my favorites on the album.
Perm: This one is pretty funky and fast-paced, and while I originally wasn't all that crazy about the very hype, shouty feel of the track, it really grew on me after multiple listens, I loved how Bruno was just oozing with charisma on the track and I found the song to just be too fun to ignore.
That’s What I Like: The song is undeniably catchy and irresistible, the hook is amazing, Bruno’s vocals are nothing short of amazing, and the song is just an absolutely fun listen. Not only is this one of the best on the whole album, but it’s definitely one of my favorite Bruno Mars songs.
Versace on the Floor: From the second this song started, I had a giant smile on my face that just wouldn’t leave. I’ve been using the word “irresistible” quite a bit in this review, but that’s the best word I can use to describe these songs, and this is no different. Bruno’s vocals are incredible as usual (possible some of the best on the album), I love the slower pacing on this one, and this one actually manages to be both romantic and sexy at the same time. It’s hard to be both, but Bruno pulls it off perfectly.
Straight Up & Down: Another slightly slower one, but one that is, again, irresistible. Catchy sound, great beat, nice swingy feel, and more fantastic vocals from Bruno. Yet another amazing song that I’ll be listening to on repeat for sure.
Calling All My Lovelies: This sounds a bit familiar, but it’s still very charming and really enjoyable. I might even go as far as to say that it feels pleasantly old-school. Not my personal favorite song on the album, but it’s still quite good, that’s for sure.
Finesse: Very funky song! I love the beat a lot, Bruno’s vocals are once again very impressive, and I’m getting some really great Michael Jackson flashbacks with this one (it actually reminds me a lot of “Remember The Time”). The hook is also incredibly catchy! Definitely a great song!
Too Good to Say Goodbye: After all the really upbeat party music, Bruno surprisingly ends the party with a slow, breakup song. It’s confusing, but I’d rather the breakup song come at the end than in the middle. While it does feel a bit familiar, Bruno’s strong vocals and the solid beat make it a pretty enjoyable listen. Once again, it also shows me that Bruno can handle many different musical styles, and he can pull them off very well. Not one of the best on the album, but it’s still a very enjoyable listen and a good end to the album.
Overall, I can’t believe I didn’t listen to this earlier, because let me tell you, this album is absolutely fantastic! It’s exciting, it’s sexy, it’s got plenty of amazing, memorable tracks and, as I’ve said over and over again, it’s irresistible. There are so many great songs to take away from this album, and while the singles (24K Magic, That’s What I Like, and Versace on the Floor) get most of the love, the other songs on the album are also fantastically enjoyable and well worth listening to. As I mentioned, Bruno has shown us over the years that he can handle a lot of different musical styles, and his change in style on this particular album is great. I know for sure that this album is gonna stick with me long after this review.
Favorite tracks: 24K Magic, Chunky, Perm*, That's What I Like, Versace on the Floor, Straight Up & Down, Finesse
Least favorite tracks: Uhh, I don't know, I liked all of them.**
Rating: Excellent
(*An asterisk next to a “favorite track” indicates that the track wasn’t initially one of my “favorite tracks” when I first wrote the review. If a track has an asterisk next to it, it means the song wasn’t initially a favorite of mine, but it grew on me, and the text for the song may have been edited to more properly reflect that.)
(**"Perm" was originally listed as a "least favorite" track. However, repeat listens helped it to grow on me, hence the double asterisks. Text in the review has been changed to reflect that.)
Matt Anderson is a guy who likes to listen to music and review it. He's not very analytical, he judges based on how it made him feel. From worst to best, his rating scale is "Awful," "Bad," "Okay," "Good," or "Excellent," though he will occasionally rate albums "Not For Me" if he feels that others will find something in them that he didn't.
