Fifth Harmony "Fifth Harmony" Album Review

Well, after enough debating, I’ve decided that I WILL review Fifth Harmony’s new self-titled album “Fifth Harmony.” I was interested in listening to this because I know they’ve had quite a few hits, and also this is their first album since the departure of Camila Cabello. Let’s see if the group can hold together without her. You know the drill at this point, rundown of each individual track, then I will sum up my thoughts on the album and give a rating of either “excellent,” “good,” “okay,” “bad,” or “awful.” Let’s go:

Down (ft. Gucci Mane): Though it’s kind of catchy and doesn’t have a bad hook, I can’t help but feel like I’ve heard this type of thing a million times before. Gucci Mane’s verse is also pretty unremarkable. A decent song, nothing more, nothing less.

He Like That: I really like the line “he got that dope boy cash, but he get it nine to five-ing” a lot, but again, the song is pretty repetitive. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t sound bad, but it’s just really standard and kind of boring. It’s not really anything out of Fifth Harmony’s comfort zone.

Sauced Up: You know what? This one also isn’t really too far out of their comfort zone, but I actually like this song. I really like how it sounds a lot, it’s super catchy, and I think some of the lyrics are very clever. Definitely gotta admit that I like this one.

Make You Mad: I like the instrumentals on this one, and the beat drop in the chorus is admittedly really cool, but again, this is very standard Fifth Harmony stuff. Nothing I’m gonna want to listen to again after this review.

Deliver: Fifth Harmony described this track as “the kinda song for when you’re getting down with your man,” and maybe I’m not the best person to ask about this because I’m single, but if I had a girlfriend and she wanted to “get down with me,” I wouldn’t want this to be the song playing. It’s really not “sexy enough” for the mood they are trying to create, and again, it’s just very generic.

Lonely Night: Fifth Harmony has apparently “never heard a song like this before,” but I just want to say, I feel like I’ve heard this quite a few times before. There are some kinda cool things going on here musically, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s “nothing I’ve heard before.” It’s a pretty solid track overall, but not as amazing as the group is making it out to be. Maybe it’ll grow on me in the future?

Don’t Say You Love Me: Once again, this song isn’t nearly as “gut-wrenching” as Fifth Harmony makes it out to be. It’s a decent track, and I really really like the vocals on it, but again, it’s nothing you haven’t heard before.

Angel: Rhythmically, I can see that Fifth Harmony is at the very least TRYING to do something a little different here, and I can appreciate that, but the song still just comes off as bland and kind of boring to me. It’s certainly not a bad track, but much like many of the other songs on this album, it’s just decent.

Messy: I actually like this one a bit more than the others on this album. I feel like this one has the potential to grow on me a lot. Once again, nothing I haven’t heard before, but it’s just really catchy and all-around pretty enjoyable.

Bridges: Being a more political song, I’d say this is lyrically the most different song on this album. And overall, I think it ends off the album very strongly. I think it’s a really uplifting song, and while the song promotes love and positivity, I like that it doesn’t feel like “factory-produced positivity.” It feels like the group genuinely wants to spread love and positivity in this one, and I really like this. I hope this one gets released as a single because I think it’s actually a really great song. Probably my favorite song on the album.

Overall, Fifth Harmony’s new album…”Fifth Harmony,” is just very standard to me. Outside of Bridges, most of the songs on this album are just okay. The good songs on here are just “solid but unspectacular” and, while there are no “bad songs” on the album, a lot of them just fall under the “eh, it was alright” category. I can say that Camila’s departure didn’t seem to have too much of a negative impact on the group, which is good, but I think that, with this album, they’ve just seemed content with staying in their comfort zone and not taking any risks. So, while it’s nowhere close to being a “bad” album, I think the girls could’ve spent a bit more time trying to do something different and not hyping up their songs as anything more than what they are: decent.

Favorite tracks: Sauced Up, Messy, Bridges

Least favorite track: Deliver, if I had to pick one

Rating: Okay
