Jack Johnson "All the Light Above It Too" Album Review

It’s time for a review of Jack Johnson’s newest album “All the Light Above It Too.” I’m not familiar with all of Jack’s songs, but I do enjoy me some good acoustic songs, and his song “Upside Down” from the movie “Curious George” is an amazing song (it’s also the first song I ever did a drum cover of on YouTube). So, Jack’s got a new album, I hear. Is it any good? Let’s look at each song and find out:

Subplots: A nice, mellow, light song with some sweet, positive lyrics and a really good hook. Probably won’t play this on repeat after this review, but it’s a solid song.

You Can’t Control It: I like the way this one starts, and I think it sounds nice overall. Jack’s vocals are also great and the message about pollution is pretty interesting. This is definitely a good song.

Sunsets for Somebody Else: I love the acoustic guitar sound on this one! Good vocals as well. This might grow on me in the future, but even if it doesn’t, it’s a pretty decent song overall.

My Mind Is For Sale: Instrumentally, this one is fantastic. Vocally, it’s another good one. Lyrically, this song actually is very clever, in that it’s very political, but it’s pretty subtle in its delivery. This is definitely one of the better songs on the album.

Daybreaks: I like the acoustic guitar track on this one, but I’m not super crazy about the hook. Overall, this one just kind of bored me a bit. It’s not bad, but it’s not one of the album’s best.

Big Sur: I get some strong beach vibes from this one. However, it’s just not that memorable to me. I don’t see myself going back to this song anytime after this review.

Love Song #16: The lack of a hook on this one is pretty interesting, but this feels like it’s very much in Jack’s comfort zone. I like how personal it feels and lyrically, it’s nice, but it’s a very standard Jack Johnson song.

Is One Moon Enough?: Another one that sounds nice overall, but just feels too grounded in Jack’s comfort zone, to the point where it just feels like a lot of the other songs on this album. It’s nothing awful, it’s just pretty average.

Gather: Whoa, talk about a different sound! This one has a really funky, interesting, and different sound from a lot of the others on this album. Even though I don’t see myself listening to this on repeat after the review, I do think it’s a pretty good song and, after a set of songs that felt like very average, standard Jack Johnson songs, this one is a solid step out of his comfort zone.

Fragments - From The Film "The Smog of the Sea": Unfortunately, after a very different-sounding song, this falls right back into Jack’s typical zone. It certainly sounds nice, but it starts to feel a bit repetitive after listening to several songs that also sounded very much like this one.

Overall, maybe my love for acoustic music is reserved largely for Ed Sheeran because Jack Johnson’s “All the Light Above It Too” is just decent. It started off pretty well with the first few songs, culminating in “My Mind Is For Sale,” which I would say is easily the best track on the album. However, after that song, everything else just kind of started to mesh together, and outside of “Gather,” none of the songs really tried to do anything differently from one another. The songs do sound good, and Jack does have a good voice, but I just think the album as a whole was very average.

Favorite tracks: You Can't Control It, My Mind Is For Sale

Least favorite tracks: Daybreaks, Big Sur
